There is a ring in my soup. It is made of non-magical gold. The only inscriptions on it are my name and an enchantment for protection. Jason is smiling across from me, his own soup ring-free.
“Will you marry me?” he asks.
The ring sits in a shallow puddle of soup on my spoon. Next to it is a dumpling. The ring looks small in comparison.
“Let me think about it,” I say.
I pick up the ring between two fingers. Broth makes the metal shine.
“Of course.”
Jason is still smiling. Like he knows something I don’t.

The wall in front of Clive is dark, filled with crisp white lines of chalk. Scattered beneath the writing are foggy patches of white dust, areas where Clive had already revised. Notes written, erased, and rewritten until he’d made sense of them. The chalk in his hand is raised to the wall, hovering over a diagram he’d configured the day before. His eyebrows furrow, erasing the last sigil he’d written with the side of his fist. White dust rubs off onto his hand.
