Aranessa didn't actually know what had happened in the courtyard for several hours past their arrival at the Lloy house.
It hadn't honestly seemed important. Their little party had all escaped more or less alive, and she knew that no one else had. She was far more concerned with the things Occtis had seen, and starting to make a plan for what they needed to do next.
But. When the boy was too exhausted to keep answering questions, when they all started to peel off to their own beds, when her duties as the lady of House Royce, insofar as there was still a House to be the lady of, were complete—then, she finally allowed herself to notice that the haunted look on Julien's face had not shifted, finally allowed herself to worry about the vicious, bright-eyed grief that had made him lash out at Occtis and the tear tracks cutting through the sweat and blood on his face.
Or: The last surviving members of Houses Royce and Davinos try to find a way to keep going. Aranessa keeps her knight as close as she can.

Now, though, he was nowhere to be found. Thaisha frowned and did a quick loop before she went to the next most likely place for him to be.
The door to Aranessa's borrowed room was still half-open, and Thaisha peeked inside to find her not in bed, but sitting on the small couch on the other side of the room, eyes fixed on nothing in particular. Thaisha could see her only in profile, but she could tell that she hadn't slept.
Or: Thaisha gets a glimpse of Aranessa and Julien, in the wreckage of all they've lost, and starts to understand how little she understands him.

The car whines when Astarion accelerates, a thumping under his feet and center console. The dashboard rattles, teeth in a skeleton, even the steering wheel keening like a death knell. Every time he brakes, something screams. He can't smell smoke, but he can feel heat pouring from the vents, sweating through his nightclothes. There's a dial from hot to cold—he spins it and feels nothing change.
When he presses its gas, the car goes forward. When he brakes, it stops.
He keeps driving.
Astarion escapes Cazador with the clothes on his back, a wad of stolen cash, and a car that's sat abandoned in a garage for thirty years.
There's a metaphor in that, perhaps.
