    Summary

One ravenously lonely beta (and proud!). One fumbling wash-out of an alpha. Two unrequited crushes. And a convenient, harmless loophole. Don't we all deserve to be a little selfish sometimes?

It was nice. It had been nice for months now. But nice wasn't a thing you could hold… keep.

Nice was the nature of the business.

The shop, Rumi, occupied a hiatus—a break between life and love. The customers came and went, and Mira would be no different.

Only she was. And that truth blackened beneath Rumi's fingertips, curling at the edges like surrender.

    Rumi let it burn.

    Summary

They both told her how they'd been sure she was dead – the pool of blood around her head, her dull eyes slipping shut, the stillness of her chest.

Rumi promised and lied – she was fine, fine, fine.

With each reassurance, the patterns burned and pushed underneath her skin like branches spreading across the sky.

Rumi can die. She just can’t stay dead. Until the Honmoon determines her work is done, it will bring her back again, and again, and again. With each death, Rumi falls apart a little more. Will there be anything left to bring back by the end?

    -or-

Five times Rumi dies and one time she doesn’t.

    Summary

Rumi shoved her away impulsively, desperate to create the distance she hadn’t needed a few seconds prior.

Mira glided back, gracefully absorbing the force, gaze bolted to Rumi’s face, those eyes like a laser-sight burning into her forehead.

Rumi’s mouth dropped open, willing herself to speak, to say anything to cut through the tension. The words didn’t come.

Mira took one slow, deliberate step forwards. A test.

    Rumi failed with flying colors.

    Summary

Celine’s office has always smelt of calm: of wood polish, paper and ink, the bergamot of her perfume. It’s always been a place Rumi has associated with tranquility. Granted, Rumi hasn’t been in here often. She’s spent all sixteen years of her life thus far in the hanok and she can count on her fingers the number of times she’s been summoned to the office. Only for important matters.

This is an important matter. It is also very much not tranquil.

Rumi stands beside Celine, seated at her desk, and observes the two girls sitting across from her.

This is them. This is them.

    Summary

Rumi adjusted her mask, then scanned the line of water. The sea was already speaking to her in small shifts—the pull of a current under the surface, the way the light fractured just before the drop-off.

When she struck out towards the deeper areas, Mira followed. Not close enough to interfere, but never far enough to lose. A steady presence just off Rumi's shoulder, camera angled slightly downward, always tracking without crowding.

Rumi moved the way she always did. Down.

The water took her without hesitation.

Rumi has spent her life rooted to the island and the sea that shaped her; Mira comes to Jeju to help document a disappearing way of life and the changing sea around it. As the project unfolds, the distance between observer and subject begins to narrow.
