Summary
Rocky, my best friend in the universe, doesn’t know that his mate is a fraud. A coward.
"A coward, and full of shit." Stratt’s voice echoes through my head, flooding my veins with an icy chill. I never volunteered for the mission. I never even wanted to try. The survival of the planet depended on me, billions of lives, an infinite amount of flora and fauna, all potentially doomed because of me. Would have been doomed, if Stratt hadn’t drugged me and thrown me on the ship herself. Oh God.
And now I’ve doomed Rocky.
I stumble to my feet, tripping over him as he follows me, squawking in Eridian faster than my tiny, useless human brain can keep up with right now. I can’t let him touch me, I don’t deserve it. I’ve doomed him to a life where his soulmate is a liar and a useless waste of carbon. I feel like the biggest failure and also as small and miniscule as a speck of dust.
Coward.
Coward.
Coward.I do the only thing I can think of at this moment, I need to get away from Rocky before I poison him further. He already almost died saving me once, I won’t risk him sacrificing more of his life for me. And so I run, again.

“I don’t know,” I say, and Rocky vibrates a loud trill at me, knowing better. “I just— What if I make a mistake?”
“Grace make many mistake, statement.”
“Thanks for the vote of confidence,” I grumble, kicking a little at the water trailing around my feet.
“Grace avoid meaning.” Rocky grabs onto the edge of my shorts, stopping me in my tracks. “Grace make mistake. Rocky make mistake, Adrian make mistake. Mistake make Grace Rocky Adrian grow, make learn.” He reaches up, presses one hand over my heart. The xenonite suit is so form-fitting that I can feel the shape of him. Still, I want more than anything to feel him. The mark on my arm burns with the need. “Grace love pebbles. Grace worry. Grace good parent. Grace not think too much. Perfect, perfect, perfect.”
“I’m not perfect, Rock,” I protest, even as tears spring unbidden to my eyes. I’ve been getting pretty used to this, honestly.
“Perfect not perfect,” Rocky answers.

I can’t help laughing at the thought, and the laughter continues, slightly hysterical, when Rocky reaches up to touch my face, stroking along my cheek, giving a worried, humming vibration.
“It just— We made them,” I say, wild with it. I feel like I’m losing my mind a little bit— as if it’s not already long, long since lost. “Us. We— How did we even do that?”
Rocky pauses, then asks, “Grace asking about egg-laying or—”
“No, I know how we did it—”
or: Ryland Grace is finally ready for Adrian and Rocky to remove the pebbles and welcome his family to the outside world. He should have expected a couple of bumps along the way.

Summary
Ryland Grace is unknowingly pregnant when he is put into suspended animation and sent on a suicide mission to save Earth from astrophage. After completing his mission and turning back for Rocky, he and his friend have to navigate ever-complicated human pregnancy and parenthood during the 4 year trip to Erid. After touchdown, will Erid be willing and able to support two fragile human lives? What will Grace have to do in the name of bravery for his child? What does life look like for a child of the stars?
