"I can't give you what you want." He says, regretting the decision to make himself known. Why did he? Because you miss him, sings a voice in the back of his mind, where the rest of his more annoying impulses originate from.
“You don’t know that,” Steve argues.
"What do you want from me?"
“Anything at all you can give me— information, time, anything.” Steve scrambles up and backs away, giving Bucky space, an out if he needs it. His hair is flopping into his eyes and he chews his lip, debating his next words.
Fuck it.
“I’m in love with you, and we promised till the end of the line. This ain’t it, and I know you’re a stubborn piece of work and I don’t really know how you’re here, but even if you don’t think you’re him I gotta be with you. It’s who I am.”

Summary
Bucky watches Steve walk away, a visual of those sad eyes of his burned into his mind.
They'd be fine. It was fine. They'd been through worse than this; when Anne dumped Bucky right before he shipped out, or when Steve soldiered through his own heartbreak because someone he'd been with for weeks had decided he wasn't it for them.
It will be okay, he lies, but the thought is empty and hollow. He knows watching Steve walk away is the hardest thing he'll ever have to do. Because the one common factor through all of those experiences? They'd had each other.
Yeah. It'll be fine.
A.K.A. the one where Steve doesn't go down with the Valkyrie, Bucky never fell from the train and everything is all screwed up.

Summary
This series started out as a place to stash prequel ficlets that were intended to be brief flashbacks/asides in a sprawling, unposted, in-progress Bucky recovery fic. But then the recovery fic's backstory got overly complicated and grew a narrative of its own. I cut the narrative off, but two more took its place. Go figure.
(And the ficlets... all turned out to be stories. Again, go figure.)
There are definitely tie-in/continuation shenanigans throughout this series, and the individual stories will be referenced by the aforementioned WIP, but each story of the series should largely be readable on its own. Pieces will be posted as they are polished up, probably out of chronological order. Each one will have at least one timestamp inside, though, and often several.
