Summary
The sun was Hans' first lover, before any girl and long before Henry. Henry doesn't mind being second to that, because the sun left its kisses behind, in the freckles that dot Hans all over his back, clustered on the tops of his shoulders and arms, whispers of faded sunburns and brief boyhood escapes. Henry can't know every story, but he wants to ask, to try and hold all of them; he can't kiss every freckle, but he can try that, too.

Hans has a bad morning and Henry does his best to cheer him up, and drowns in his lover's body in the process.

Summary
He walks directly to his lord’s chambers, with an undercurrent of anxiety pricking his skin; it's not fear, precisely, and it's not anticipation. It’s not even, wholly, the hunter and the hunted. Beyond any of that – perhaps most of all – Henry feels a stumbling, almost boyish shyness, as if a lad from the stable has lent him his own untried heart.

Hans puts on a dress and torments Henry. Then, Henry puts on a dress, and Hans torments him again. Everyone has baby fever.

Summary
When Henry swings off of Pebbles in the courtyard of Pirkstein, dusty with travel and tired from the road, it is not his lord, or even his lady, who greets him first.
“Hal!” Heinrich, his little child-voice high and excitable, outruns his nurse as he dashes to Henry. “Hal, Hal, Hal!”

Summary
There are many alcoves in the castle that Hans has dragged him to, many locked doors and silent places where they meet in secret, away from prying eyes and pricked and eager ears.
This is not one of them.

Summary
"Are you cold?" Henry asked.
Without armor, in hose and gambeson, he was still an imposing figure: tall and broad, hands stained with dirt and blood, jaw stubbornly stiff. His bare feet were a shock of white in the dirt. He held his helm with both hands, embracing the metal into his belly. His hair was damp with sweat. There was another string of bruises on his throat, shaped like two wide thumbs.
Hans looked away. The tunic around Henry's knee had darkened. Blood was trickling into the dirt.
Hans kills a man, prepares for a wedding, and tries to do at least one thing right.
(Or: five times Hans and Henry didn't share a bed, and one time they did.)

Summary
For twenty years, Henry of Skalitz was forgotten—buried in darkness, bound in rusted chains, waiting for rescue that never came.
Hans Capon never stopped looking for Henry—never stopped chasing ghosts, never stopped losing hope, never stopped failing. And now, his son has done what he could not.
Heinrich expected to find a prisoner. Instead, he found a ruin of a man—too frail to stand, too lost to recognize his own name. He takes Henry, carries him into the world he once knew.
Henry has been found. But can men so thoroughly broken be saved?

Summary
“Still your tongue—”
“Thoughts back on my tongue so soon, my lord? Tell me,”—Henry’s mouth twists into a smile, acrid and full of bite in a way that makes Hans’ blood pool at the base of him, half tempered from just a look. He leans in, breath so hot against Hans’ ear it makes him shiver—“how many heirs will you waste down my throat before you’ll admit to yourself you like putting them there?”
