The man knelt down, becoming level with Jean, and he gently grasped his chin. Jean’s partially closed eyes met his when he lifted it. “I think you should really put some thought into it,” he suggested in a slow, imploring tone. “And have a different answer when I come back for you.”

Jean and Armin are captured by a Marleyan squadron under suspicion of Restorationist activity. They each endure a different form of torture and are changed forever by this short, traumatic event. It forces their friendship to evolve, their behavior to incite concern from their team, and for them to realize that if they're going to come away from this shared experience, they'll need to do so together.
Jearmin fans: you barely even need to squint for this to be pre-slash. I love intimate friendships and that's how I've written this.

Erwin leaves him feelin’ off-center. Leaves him feelin’ small and wretched, like he really ain’t nothin’ more than a petty, stupid criminal. In the face of Erwin’s far-reaching gaze, lookin’ off someplace Levi can’t even begin to imagine, let alone see. He feels the weight of his own insignificance, standing next to this man. The meaningless struggle of his own, poor existence.

Summary
Jean has long thought Marco Bodt, his best friend and maybe something more, to be long dead, and he thought, maybe, that he'd made his peace with it. That was how life was, as a soldier. People die, and people don't come back.
But after a report comes in from spy stationed in Marley, he learns that might not be the case.
Jean quickly realises that dead things have a bad habit of not staying dead, and that it takes a thousand times longer to put things back together than it takes to break them apart.
