But sometimes when they'd gather around the campfire, and Grandpa Max would hand him a stick of toasted marshmallow, Ben finds he can't stop thinking. Summary
It had been a routine day, and Douma had just finished devouring one of his followers, when one of his ice dolls begins acting strange...
If I had another me around, Douma had thought to himself slyly, why, no one would understand me more. "What shall I call you?" He wondered, tapping a nail against his chin. He smiled at the doll indulgently, serenely, if not even a bit coyly, attempting to put on a friendly face for it to see.
"Call me...?" It echoed, tilting its head at him. The motion held the strange endearing quality of an infant. It smiled at him back, a bit more hesitant and shy, round eyed, like the same boyish smile often he wore when he was young, and perhaps this, Douma thought, had been the first sign he thought he hated it.

Summary
For the longest time, Douma lacked the awareness to fully understand the kind of world he was occupying. There were the adults that came to him crying, and there were the commands and soft suggestions his mother whispered into his ear to help them feel better. It must have been an elaborate sort of game he had been playing, and everyone played their part frighteningly well.
For a four year old, the words felt heavy, clumsy, and unfamiliar on his tongue. Most days, he stays silent and cries.
He hadn't known it, but this would be a game he would be playing for a very long time.

Summary
The girl wasn't afraid but she had not been given permission to speak so she said nothing. The man tilted his head to the side, smile fading to a confused pout.
"Aren't you going to scream?" he asked.
The girl said and did nothing.
His hand tightened around her throat, strong enough it cut off her breath. She did nothing, even when her vision began to blacken as her lungs struggled and twisted from the lack of air. After a moment his hand relaxed and she took a breath, but made no attempt to push away from him or fight his grip.
"That's strange," the man said, "Are you really not afraid?"
She blinked but did not respond. His hand loosened around her throat until he was pressing his bloody index finger against her neck, sensing her pulse. It was as steady and calm as it had ever been since that day she became empty and hollow.
"Well, aren't you interesting. I think I'll keep you," the man decided.
