Summary
Dunk didn’t know he could want things for himself (aside from knighthood) until Lyonel. Lyonel didn’t know he could want something real until Dunk. Both were always told they were too much and not enough and believed it until they met and disagreed.
In an alternate telling of the Tourney of Ashford Meadow, Ser Duncan the Tall and Lyonel Baratheon have a little more time, to do more than dance, after the first night. They’re just beginning to truly know one another, and are both falling fast, when Dunk defends Tanselle and Egg’s secret is exposed. When a trial of seven is demanded, Dunk doesn’t feel he has a choice; he could never find six knights to fight for him, nor will his self worth issues let him risk even trying. The only other thing offered is to lose his hand and lose everything with it.
Lyonel Baratheon fought his whole life to be free of the people that demanded he be small and joyless. He’s a man everyone admires but no one knows. When a beautiful giant enters his tent, asking for nothing, he’s entranced and embraces it fully. When something terrible happens to his new lover, he has a choice to make- to embrace this as more than a passing fancy and save Dunk or continue to be carefree and alone.

“Oh, don’t call me maiden knight.” Dunk pleaded.
Lyonel’s eyes lit up, “I was going to call you Ser Duncan. Given that you are a knight of the realm, sworn to my ancient and noble house. But, if you insist-”
“I don’t insist, no one’s insisting,” he insisted.
“Are you saying you don’t like it, sweetling? That your eyes don’t light up in pleasure at the term? I wonder, is it my calling you a maiden? A man the size of you getting to be treasured. Or that you’re a knight. Or perhaps, it’s the reminder that I have claimed you,” he was much too perceptive for his own good. Or, for Dunk’s at least.
“Dunk, call me Dunk. If you would have me call you Lyonel,” he conceded.
AU- Aerion does not hurt Tanselle, so the Trial of the Seven doesn't happen and Lyonel gets to take his maiden knight home with him.
Or Dunk gets to compete in the tourney of Ashford Meadow and it ends up giving him everything he ever wanted.
