After their parting, John and Arthur tried not to think about each other much, effort in futility though it may be. As Arthur made the long trip back home, he noticed how quiet the truck was, how empty and cold it felt even with the heater on and the southern sun baking the asphalt outside.
John, despite laying with a roof over his head and a warm, soft blanket pulled up to his chin, couldn’t get comfortable with the aching in his chest.

It had been Arthur decision, originally, to cut off the main road and follow a deer trail through the trees. John could guess why the man didn’t want to stick to the main path, they had just robbed payroll a few towns back and barely escaped by the skin of their teeth, which wasn’t his fault no matter what Arthur said.
How was he supposed to know a second set of more armed guards were trailing the wagon?
So now they were here, days away from the town where they were supposed to meet up with the rest of the camp, riding through the woods on a trail that John couldn’t even see, trusting his large war horse to attempt to match the confident strides of Arthur's blood-red Arabian.
