They're both men of action with watchful eyes; in the years they've grown together John learned how to soothe him with actions and words, even at the risk of Arthur lashing out. Like now. Arthur never would've sought out love or reassurance, but John knew he needed it, came and found him. Something about the care and consideration makes Arthur's heart swell.
