“Is the saving worth the sacrifice, Whitaker?”
Robby’s breath warms his temple with the soft exhale of words, fingers finding something to do with the tangled mess of his bloodied scrubs. Dennis could tell him to stop staring at him like he was an atlas for regret—to leave their baggage at the door where they left everything else important about them to make room for another person's grief—but he doesn’t think it’d make much difference in the way things ended.

Summary
In a spur of agony a couple years ago Pezzy looked up the spirtual meaning of pain in the throat. It happened to him so much that he actually started getting hallucinations and fell in psychosis, believing that this life he was living, and the emotions he was feelings, was a elaborate scheme by deities or some supernatural beings that saw it fit as a punishment for things done in a past life. He remembers sobbing and screaming apologizes.
The meaning of it ended up being retribution, rebirth.
Pezzy guesses he finds it correct. After the hurt subsides it feels like he’s a whole new different person. And sometimes he doesn’t recognize that person. Y’know, when you live almost your entire life with agony it finds a way to shrivel into your soul and make it you.
He supposes that’s why he hurts himself, to let the pain shrivel itself into his soul so he can see himself clearly.
