Gorey sets down the file that had been in her hands and reaches right behind where Gina is leaning against the desk, up to the heavy tomes on the top shelf, half-hidden behind that velvet-y pink curtain. At some point she pulls back and opens up the book, but Gina doesn’t know exactly when. She’s stopped paying attention to everything but the half-inch of space between her and Gorey’s body. She swears she can feel the heat coming off of her, the whisper of her breath in her ear. It sparks off something hot and sharp inside Gina, rising like a back-alley bonfire, choking her with the smoke.
The thing is—Gina already knows these things about herself. She knows what she feels watching a pretty girl walking down the street, where her mind wanders when she drinks a bit too much, what she dreams of at night with a hand between her thighs. And she knows just as well it’s not what she ought to be feeling, but Gina’s never been good at being what she ought. She’s always been best at wanting what she can’t have.
Gina pays Maria Gorey a visit.

Despite what his brother or the tabloids might say the next day, Klavier wasn’t doing this recklessly. Klavier was not a child, nor was he the bad boy he played on stage. Klavier was a man who woke up at the same time every day and followed the same ten-step skin care routine every evening; he organized his concerts down to the second and knew every case he’d prosecuted down to the last speck of evidence. If a file lay half-open on his office floor or a strand of hair fell into his eyes, it wasn’t a matter of carelessness. No, it was because Klavier put it there, because that was exactly how he wanted it.
Klavier was not a man flung out to sea by a tide of grief, nor was he another tragic pop star melting beneath the limelight. Klavier was a man acting out the logical conclusion to a series of events. Namely: a week ago Vera Misham had looked at him and seen the devil, and Klavier had spent every day since searching for himself in the mirror and only ever finding her terror reflected back.
Put simply: Klavier had an image problem. Cutting his hair was preferable to crawling out of his own skin.
Klavier shaves his head. Apollo (inadvertently) helps.

Her mother lingers in the details— her anatomy books on the shelves, the specimens along the walls labelled in her hand, the colleagues that cannot help but comment on their family resemblance. Maria still holds a scalpel just the way her mother taught her.
Mama’s not dead, not yet. But Maria wonders, when her mother finally hangs, what story her body will tell. She wonders if her own will be any different.

He gave a weak smile to Charon, whose gaze had gone unreadable.
Two seconds of silent staring was all Hermes could take before he lost his nerve.
“Or, you know, forget that. My family is always saying I don’t do well with social graces. Every time I speak it’s all ‘blunt object, no point’ according to Hera. She’s my step-ma or something like that. You know it’s not really clear what we’re supposed to be to each other so-”
His rambling was stopped by Charon taking the periwinkle from his fingers and carefully threading it behind Hermes’ ear the way Hermes had just done for him. The man’s fingers delicately secured the blooms and his fingers moved through Hermes’ hair before he patted the top of his head like he was gentling a worked up animal.
Hermes can't read. Charon can't speak. They bridge the gap through the flowers.
