The first thing Mac realized was that he was being carried, the second thing he realized was that he’d died.
Death left a very specific taste in his mouth, ashy, like he’d taken a big mouthful of a burned out campfire.
In addition to the taste — though that was always the most distinctive sign — was the bitter cold. Even being soaked in freezing water, as he also happened to be, failed to elicit the depths of cold that haunted him after a revival. It felt like his heart was pumping ice-water instead of blood.
Suddenly he was being lowered, a hand cupping the back of his head on the way down to keep it from knocking against the ground. That alone was enough to cue Mac in on who’d been carrying him. In the list of people who cared about him, he didn’t know anyone else who was strong enough and stubborn enough to lug around his frozen corpse.Bookmarked by useless_script

Summary
What was supposed to be a standard extraction mission in the Arizona desert goes sideways fast when the Phoenix team’s convoy is ambushed by an unidentified paramilitary group with high-grade weapons and insider intel. MacGyver, Desi, and Riley are forced off-road into rough canyon terrain, but during the firefight, Mac takes a shot to the upper thigh—an arterial hit.
Bleeding out in minutes, they’re forced to take refuge in an abandoned trailer miles from any hospital. No signal. No evac. And no time.
The problem? Riley’s panicking. Desi’s injured too—dislocated shoulder. That leaves Mac to guide them through a makeshift arterial clamp and field surgery on himself. With adrenaline and pain clouding his thoughts, he walks Riley through a brutal, improvised procedure using what’s available: fishing wire, a camping stove, pliers, and a phone camera to reflect the wound.

Jack’s gun was angled low but at the ready, aimed at the ground midway between Mac and himself. A short flick, moving the gun less than an inch, and the incremental movement of pulling down on the trigger. The time it’d take the bullet to travel mere feet? Jack didn’t know the exact numbers, but it was going to be faster than the sniper’s bullet from the distant rooftop.
In real time it all played out so much faster, so much colder.
“Shit, I think this is a trap, hoss.” Jack hissed out, unholstering his gun and aiming it down to the ground. “Eyes out.”
Mac grimaced in agreement and twisted to scan the street, half-turning his back to Jack. Then Jack’s gun had jerked up slightly, he’d fired, and Mac hit the ground as the bullet punched into the back of his lower leg. He’d let out a little sound as it happened, a gasped hiss. Half pain, half shock. Pain because he got shot, shock because it had come from where Jack was covering him.//

It took longer than expected to open his eyes, the effort he’d had to use almost making him consider for a moment if they were glued shut, but eventually he opened them a fraction.
The world was a swirly and blurry mess of colours, which in turn made his stomach churn harder, but as his eyes slowly inched open, he could make out the face of Maggie.

Pikachu was on his mind as he yelled at them again, and this time someone made direct eye contact with him and snarled. Ash glared back, and made to snark some sort of reply, when the chair abruptly tipped back until he was nearly at one-hundred-eighty degrees. He fought to sit up again, but there was enough of a distraction that he lost his chance as the—was it a man?—pressed their hand back against his chest.
His head was held still, as much as he tried to whip it around, but it did no good, as two of them worked to restrain it with their hands. Lights flashed uncomfortably in his eyes, and he brought up his hand to block, closing them shut tight. He wanted to scream from the helplessness he felt here, the confusion. What was going on? Why was he here? What were they doing to him? Who were these people? Where was Pikachu?!
