Summary
Luffy, Ace and Sabo had been dealing with extreme health conditions for the last seven years after dying painful, separate deaths. They're finally free and making a name for themselves when they catch the eyes of a certain yonko crew. But when they're taken to be with them, it doesn't go well. Things only get exponentially worse under the stress of their loss of precious freedom. The freedom they're crawled out of the grave to attain. Now everything is going wrong. When they’re on the forecastle, with the helm just behind them and the figurehead casting them further in shadow, Usopp calls, “Raise the sails!”
Luffy’s gasp next to his ear is the best part of his entire day.
The sails unfold in a great rolling crash of canvas. Even the striped gaff swings out, catching the wind. The whole sloop gives a powerful lurch as if she’s eager to sprint out of port on the back of whatever gale blows along next.
And painted on the foresail, bold and bright and proud, is a grinning Jolly Roger in a yellow straw hat.
“That’s mine,” Luffy whispers, hushed and awed.
“Told you so,” Usopp says smugly.

“You’re the brat’s favorite,” Garp says, in the tone of voice he uses when he thinks someone’s stupid. Ace normally rears up in anger when he uses that tone, but this time, what Garp said has him blinking at him in shock.
Ace says blankly, “I’m his favorite?” Well, Ace guesses, it does make sense – Luffy doesn’t really have anyone else that stays with him. Garp’s never here, Dadan doesn’t really care about them, or at least not enough to stay around them all the time, and Makino- well. She’s amazing, but she can’t be there all the time. Still, though- “Why?”
This time, Garp turns around fully to look at Ace. “Why?” He asks incredulously. “You’re his brother and he loves you, duh.”
Ace’s brain stalls.
