Summary
“I bet there isn’t a view this good in Massachusetts.”
“Pfft, yeah,” replied Anne.
Sasha just swallowed, breathing heavily. She would be the one to cry the most in the airport, uncharacteristic of the fierce Commander she was back in Amphibia. She held the bag of beach stuff, now with a new collection of seashells they would string together into friendship bracelets when they got back, ate dinner and watched War of the Warlocks.
Many years later, as they drifted apart and made new friends, their only comfort would be those bracelets. And the fact that a yellow sneaker was laid somewhere upon Amphibian land, ruined and tattered, that a chibi drawing of two newts would be hung up on a fridge in a rickety old Amphibian house, and a letter penned by Sasha’s own hand during New Wartwood would stay on the desk of a certain toad.

Summary
“You aren’t from here, huh?” said Braddock, looking at her legs underneath the flimsy salmon-pink uniform skirt. “Keep it. You’re gonna need it.”
Sasha didn’t respond. Not from here… Of course she wasn’t. She never felt welcome in her own home, let alone this place. Maybe the Boonchuys’ was the closest to home. She tied the denim jacket around her waist, already feeling the cold of the Tower beginning to seep in.
All occurred in a blur, but soon there was a crowd of people. A cold leg cuff being attached to one of her ankles and a chain connecting her to a cell. The soldier who she recognized as Percy (why did she remember that?) set down a bowl— a curved bowl, like that of a pet’s— of indiscernible green slop with bugs mixed in. What was undoubtedly dirty water was set down in a similar bowl in the same unceremonious fashion. She gagged and pushed the bowls away in disgust.
“Brat,” said the Captain, laughing a horrible, grating sound. It was still better than the sound of her parents’ yelling; the sound of vodka bottles shattering in the dead of night.

Summary
Sasha’d laugh. “Yeah. We run into incoming traffic, and then get put in that video game you like.”
“Imagine this:
You’re pulling the car over. Somebody’s waiting.
You’re going to die in your best friend’s arms.”
She’d close her book. “Vagabondia Chronicles.”
“Yeah, yeah. Whatever.” Because subconsciously, to them, Marcy’s interests were just that; hers alone. They didn’t need positive attention to flourish.
“And you play along because it’s funny, because it’s written down,
you’ve memorized it,
it’s all you know.”
Anne would look half-concerned, cup a few of her coveted goldfish into each of their hands— “Guys, don’t say that!”
“Chill. It’s just a joke.” A bite; aloof. Clear. Sasha Elizabeth Waybright, to the core.
“It’d be cool if it was real. Escaping to another world…”

Summary
The first thing Sasha says when they sit down is, “I went on a date this weekend.”
Anne’s breath hitches. Why does she care so much? Sasha deserves a happy life. “Oh. With who? Did you like it?”
Even this is unusual. In the Before, they’d always known everything about each other, from food preferences to idol biases.
Sasha is no stranger to confessions. This time, it’d been an eighth grader from the middle school department, a boy with fluffy red hair and freckles. He was cute , she admits, but in the same way a fad fashion trend or lost raccoon was. Not pretty, like the Perseids, Anne’s smile, or Marcy’s rambles. Sasha is… a selfish person. She was too cowardly to confess, so she went for the next best thing.
Did you like it? On that, Sasha contemplates. Going on a date with a random person to fill a void was not something a nice girl did. Sasha has long known she is far from a nice girl. Nice girls don’t steal.
