Spike has resigned himself to being Santa once a year, so those bleedin elves will leave him alone for 10 months if he doesn’t kill anyone. No matter what he does, he can’t shake the Clause: the beard, the belly, or the magic that turns any punk clothes he buys into ugly Christmas sweaters.
To Buffy, the Slayer of Slayers seems like an old vampire desperately trying to reclaim his youth with a mess of a beard and too terrible of an attitude to be Jolly St. Nick. Not like Spike’s much of a Saint.
Though, from what Willow told her, the real St. Nick got into a fight at some kind of meeting, right? He can’t be that old, though.
Witness Christmas magic, Spike trying to goad people into killing him to rid himself of the Clause, elves putting up with his shit, elves not realising Willow cast a spell and Buffy is not Mrs. Claus, Riley getting jealous over a fat old vampire and then getting mad at himself for being jealous of a fat old vampire, the elves trying to matchmake Giles & Ethan to convince Giles to kill Spike and become Santa, and more!

... It's a duck.
There's just a tiny bit of magic floating around after Willow ends the Will be Done spell, and it turns the resident captive vampire into a duckling. And he's so adorably angry about it. Question is now... who's going to take care of duckling!Spike? Oh, it's Buffy, of course.
But Spike being a duck doesn't mean everything else goes away. He's got a new perspective, and over time, so does Buffy. Changes to Season 4 grow as time goes on.
I'm sure someone's written something like this before, but I got the idea and here we are. The plot also started to happen, and now I can't stop it.

Summary
Buffy's mom is dating this new guy, Ted. He's nice, polite, and has a good job. He also has a tendency to fly into uncontrollable fits of rage whenever Buffy does something he doesn't like. Everything in Buffy's life feels like it's falling apart and Buffy has no power to stop it. All she can do is hide out in the library with her sister so that they don't have to spend any more time at home with Ted than they already do.
Faith's living with Ms. Calendar. She took her in after Faith ran away from home. Ms. Calendar is dating a new guy, the school librarian. He's British and fancy and seems nice enough but Faith doesn't trust him. She knows from experience—years of having to put up with her mom's shitty boyfriends—that even the nicest seeming guys could be putting up a front. Ms. Calendar may be a smart lady, but Faith knows that she doesn't have the experience Faith has at identifying creeps. So she's going to make sure this guy's safe. And if it means hanging out in the library, the place where Buffy Summers, the hottest girl Faith has ever laid eyes upon, seems to basically be living in nowadays, well, that's just an unexpected perk.

We pick up after Buffy's first encounter with Glory, when she's just learned about the truth about her sister Dawn. This is a slow, slow burn Spuffy fic with scenes centered around those two. The first canon divergence is simple -- Spike encounters Buffy on her way home after getting pummeled by Glory and having a bomb dropped on her by the dying monk. He is struggling with accepting his feelings for her, but ends up trying a slightly less unhinged approach to building trust and winning her affections. The road is long and winding, and honestly this started as a single scene where Spike cheers Joyce and Dawn up by dancing with them and then it just... got away from me.

On Hiatus: I don't like doing this, but because "On the Run" and this fic are both season 5, the streams were kind of crossing in my brain, in terms of where both Spike and Buffy are, character-wise. I want to keep these fics unique, so I will return to this after "On the Run" is complete. This is not abandoned. I love writing it too much.
