Jack knows he’s hit a nerve, because the edge of Nico’s mouth tightens almost imperceptibly. But Jack would recognize it anywhere, because he’s spent the last six years of his career trying to make Nico’s life a living hell every time they encounter each other.
“Funny, last time I checked, harassment went against our code of conduct. Yet here you are, with your sunny disposition and general aura of hostility,” Nico scowls, voice airy as if he’s commenting on the weather, not on their long-standing feud that occupies far too much space in Jack’s brain.

Nico Hischier was a lot of things. A fearless captain, a loyal friend, and a caring boyfriend, to name a few. He liked to think he was decently intelligent, that he was a good person to come to if you needed advice. He took good care of his rookies, always had the team’s best interest at heart, and was fiercely protective of the ones he loved.
For everything that Nico was good at, there was one thing he didn’t have as much success with: kids.
Jack, on the other hand, was the opposite. He was a natural, always asking to hold babies and high-fiving toddlers, all of which made Nico’s heart beat out of time.

Nico’s jaw drops against his will, feeling his face trying to morph into about ten different shades of red at once. (He also envisions getting on his knees if Jack calls him captain again, but unfortunately, he has a hockey game to go play.) He lets out a maniacal-sounding laugh that comes out more like a choke, practically sprinting away before he could blurt out something stupid.

Nico hadn't realized how much he had been struggling this season until someone started leaving little presents in his stall. There was no reason why these seemingly mundane items would have such a potent magical aura. He didn't question it because it made him feel better— play better— until his curiosity started to gnaw at him.
