The way Zhao looks down at Zuko is beyond creepy, and wanting to capture Aang doesn't explain tying them up in a row and tossing Zuko over a rock at hip height in front of them. Katara gets the sense that something terrible is about to happen, that Zhao is about to hurt Zuko badly.

Summary

Summary
After Zuko's Agni Kai with Ozai and he learns of his banishment, Zuko flees the Fire Nation afraid, confused, and alone, leaving his uncle behind who has a chance to grow close to Azula. Zuko understands much sooner that his father never loved him and finds himself in an Earth Kingdoms forest surrounded by boys who want to free their kingdom from the Fire Nation. Zuko joins the Freedom Fighters claiming to be a nonbender from the Earth Kingdoms, growing in confidence in himself. When it is reveled that he is a firebenders, Jet is forced to understand not all members of the Fire Nation are war mongers and both boys are significantly less angsty when the Gaang shows up.

Summary
What if when Zuko was rejected by the Gaang in the Western Air Temple, Zuko didn't accidentally burn Toph when she found him? This is a slightly altered way of Zuko joining the group, and his struggle to both gain their trust and begin to feel he deserves it when he does. Book 3 seemed to fly through the emotions and character stuff, so here's my attempt to slow 'em down. (2024 update: on hiatus still but will be back when my muse makes its way back to ATLA!)

Summary
Zuko is an awkward turtleduck. Literally. His attempts at convincing the Avatar and his friends to take him on as part of their team so that he can teach Aang firebending don't go as well as he had hoped, and in the face of what feels like a futile endeavor, Zuko drops his guard and lets his emotions get the best of him. He wasn't expecting to transform here of all places, or to be targeted by a passing predator, but the universe has a funny sense of humor and a creative way of punishing him so why not add public humiliation to the list as he is forced to hide in plain sight, feathers and all, and bide his time until he can concoct a new plan to convince Aang that he has turned over a new leaf and truly wishes to help them.

Summary
An Alternate Universe where after the Agni Kai, Ozai has Zuko thrown into a dark cell, deep beneath the palace so Zuko can no longer be a disappointment to the Royal Family. The reason that Ozai cannot just get rid of Zuko is because Zuko and Mai were betrothed under a blessing of Agni. To have Zuko killed before the betrothal is completed by marriage would anger Agni. So Ozai waits and plots. He plans to make the ceremony as humiliating as possible for Zuko
Azula informs Mai that Ozai has decreed that Mai and Zuko's betrothal will be concluded. By Mai and Zuko marrying. This is a complete shock to Mai, Zuko has not been seen or heard from in over three years, ever since the fateful Agni Kai. Confused but knowing the risks of refusing, Mai is escorted by Azula and her mother to purchase a wedding dress.
Meanwhile, in a dark cell underneath the Palace, two guards have just finished giving Prince Zuko a beating on Firelord Ozai's orders. Now under orders, they move Zuko from the cell and unbeknownst to Zuko, take him to get ready for the wedding.
I like Mai and Zuko as a couple and I have wanted to try writing something about them for a while. Zuko is 17 in this and Mai is 16, FYI.
