Only two words, yet Bruce stilled, bound by ice-cold terror.
Batman places his big hand on the boys scrawny shoulder and persistently guides him forward, to Bruce. Before Wayne can process this statement and make up a response, Batman dissolves into shadows.
They're gonna have a talk about dropping off random kids by his door.
The child and he observe each other for one long moment. Bruce sees tired, but feisty blue eyes, haggard face..

Dick is too far away to make out any real details about the boy across the club, but his hair catches Dick’s eye—rusty red, with a streak of white right up front. He wonders if the kid bleached it or something.
Dick moves closer. No reaction from the kid. Even when Dick sits down right next to him, he doesn’t look at Dick, just stares off at nothing with a transfixed yet unfocused gaze. Dick’s not sure what he’s on, but judging by how wide his pupils are blown open, he’s on something. His entire demeanor is nervous, skittish, on constant alert for danger. Dick recognizes the look on his face: his instinct for constant alertness is at war with the drugs dulling his senses, and it’s freaking him out.
Dick leans in close to be heard over the music and says, “Hey, you alright, kid?”
One year before Red Hood will make his first appearance in Gotham City, Jason Todd gets a little too high at a rave.
Dick is too high himself to realize that the boy he's comforting is his supposed-to-be-dead little brother—which becomes very apparent when he invites Jason back to his hotel room.

After watching the fight between Batman and Clayface, Jason is torn. Bruce has no reason to lie over the fact that he believed Jason knew that Bruce loved him, but Jason didn't know that. It made him wonder if his other family might...care. He finds his way across the bridge to Bludhaven, while also making inroads into Gotham's crime underground as the Red Hood.
In Bludhaven he meets a damaged Supergirl and finds himself accidentally taking on the identity of Flamebird, when Superman comes to see her. And, after that, well, certainly it wouldn't hurt to look out for Nightwing as Flamebird, right?If only a jealous Wally West wasn't SURE that Flamebird was trying to make a play for his man and going to make sure that Flamebird stayed FAR away from Nightwing.
