Going broke was never something Hob Gadling had intended to do. In fact, with barely enough money in his account to pay for a hotel and a storage unit, he goes to have a pint with Johanna Constantine, who offers to put him up in the remote and mysterious Dream House, with a long and bloody history. And has been in the Constantine family for centuries, meaning that Johanna has the keys. Hob does not take much convincing. What could go wrong, really?

From the day he was declared Crown Prince, Morpheus has stood on a pedestal, with everyone who laid eyes on him treating him as something fragile—especially after an incident that left him scarred and wary. Morpheus has long since accepted his duties, and he has always been aware that they include him finding a wife of his station to bear him heirs.
The time for him to take on this responsibility comes in the form of the Summer Solstice Ball, where he is expected to choose and court a maiden from a noble family.

To Hob, Morpheus is the monarch he has sworn his life to protect. Beyond his solemn vow as a knight, he has grown to think of the prince as a trusted friend, and Hob would never do anything to cause him distress. Avery’s laugh is the first thing Morpheus hears on a Monday morning in early September. Just as he wakes, the hyperactive culprit jumps up on the bed and onto his chest, winding him in the process. Turning his head to the side, he notices Hob has already left the bed; likely, he is in the kitchen making breakfast. His heart flutters a little as he realises he was probably left to sleep longer, as he had been in a fair amount of pain last night and had not slept easily.
Set two years on from 'what was before is left behind', Morpheus is still adjusting to human life, Hob Gadling is being stubborn and refuses to give in, Avery is still being a ray of sunshine- but something is still not quite right.

Summary
Hob Gadling is by necessity, not desire, a lone wolf. It has to be that way, so he knuckles under, works hard, takes care of his little boy, and stays on the move. But work means putting Robby into daycare, and thus into Hob's life comes a new nursery teacher, Mr Endless, and the weird feeling that they've met before. It's just one more thing that Hob's not very happy about, because the last thing he wants is to belong.
