Ph.D. candidate Dawn Berlitz studies how Trainer–Pokémon partners recover when the plan falls apart. She is considerably less prepared for her own professional disaster: cornered by a senior scholar at a department reception, she panics, grabs the nearest man, calls him “babe,” and accidentally claims she is dating Dr. Paul Rebolledo—the department’s most feared assistant professor and the last person who should ever be anyone’s fake boyfriend.
The arrangement should solve both their problems. Dawn gets breathing room from a man who refuses to respect professional boundaries. Paul looks rooted enough for Jubilife University to keep investing in him. All they have to do is survive the gossip, the professional optics, and the inconvenient fact that Paul thinks Dawn’s entire theory is optimism with more glitter.
Then their arguments become collaboration. The fake dates start feeling dangerously real. And the more convincing the lie becomes, the harder it is to tell which parts are still pretend.
Dawn calls him insufferable. Paul calls her Troublesome.
