Instinct urges him to push, to break free, to move and explore and survive. Skip is complaining about finals, mostly—something Norman is glad to be on the other side of, and he thinks that doing another damn degree might just kill him—and the conversation shifts to the upcoming break; how happy they both are that it’s almost here, what everyone else’s plans are, they even talk about the damn weather like some old married couple. A white Christmas.
It should maybe feel nicer than it does. Ain’t that something that people get all excited about? Snow on Christmas. Seems like the sort of thing, and somewhere in the back of his mind is a memory, snow crunching under tires and two bodies leaned up against him in the bed of a beat up truck. It takes him a moment to claw his way out of his own damn head, and another to realize that Skip has been talking still and he hasn’t been paying a lick of attention.

They had been laying here for marbecs, staring sightlessly at the low plastic ceiling of their bunk while Norman ground his teeth and held his shoulders and neck so tight that Skip thought his bones might snap. Skip was tired—they both were—and was starting to get more than a little pissed because tomorrow was his turn to front for the malton unit, and at this rate he was going to be too exhausted to enjoy it.
I thought you'd be happy all the Jib-Job spaces were rented out, Skip finally said around the fourth or fifth time Norman heaved a soul-weary sigh.
I'm happy for the ship's bank account, Norman said after a martron of uncomfortable silence. The words came slowly, deliberate. He was still getting used to talking inside their head. Hate it for me.
Norman has a hard time sleeping in the shared crew quarters. Skip helps.

Piloting a body had never been easier, no longer a parasite struggling to take over an unwilling host, but a copilot and partner, as if the body belonged to him as much as it belonged to Norman. They shared memories and emotions and dreams effortlessly—after they'd untangled the mess of distrust and suspicion between them, once Norman let his guard down, once he understood that Skip was not judging him, would never judge him—endless conversations in their dreamlike interior mindscape. There was an unexpected joy in knowing another person so completely and being known in return. Symbiosis was a singing harmonic thrum, a melody that hummed across his connection with Norman in everything they did.
