He and Auston are last off the ice, during warmups and after periods. Only today they’re warming up alone, at different ends of the rink.

He’s standing at the door of his high-rise apartment, waiting for the anvil to drop. Instead, Auston holds it open and he steps inside. Maybe Auston can come round some time too, stand at the foot of his place, and he’ll have the window already open with his grand piano teetering from the ledge. Then, after, it hit Willy that Auston did not notice, despite drifting in and out of his bed and body. That one scar on the outside of his left thigh, running thin but deep. Perhaps it was because the light was always dim or off. Perhaps Auston did not care to look or remember.
Willy could not remember getting the scar, just like how he could not tell how Auston made such a mark in his life. He remembered only the aftermath. Phantom pain and phantom joy.
