He was tempted to ignore the call, but in the end, he knew he couldn’t do that. Not to her.

“Hey,” he answered. He put her on speaker so he could keep typing.

“I’m sorry,” were her first words. They were rushed and she sounded breathless and he wondered how insane the ED had been for her that day.

While he can’t say that the daily joys of running the ED have made him stronger or any of that other pseudo-motivational bullshit, it has made him pretty goddamn good at compartmentalizing - of taking whatever it is that he can’t look directly at, putting it in an iron box, and squirreling it away to never be seen again so long as he can help it.

He’s never had a problem with this strategy (never, not once, ask anyone and they’ll tell you) - until now. Because Denise Whitaker won’t fit in the fucking box.

(Or - five times that Robby learns something new about Denise Whitaker and one time she learns something new about him.)

“I love it there, don’t get me wrong. I love getting to talk to and get to know my patients. Seeing their smiles when they find out they’re going to be alright is one of may favorite parts of the job. But I think the worse part of it all might also be having to see their families faces when they find out their loved one isn’t gonna be alright.”

“There’s a reason I’m in surgery.” Dr. Park told her blankly.

“Yeah, I suppose you don’t see too many crying faces in the OR do you?”

“Typically people can’t cry when under anesthesia.”

Emma couldn’t help the snort that came out of her mouth at that. Looking up at the attending she told him, “You’re pretty funny, Dr. Park. Has anyone told you that?”

“Mhm.” he hummed, not giving her anything else.

    ---

Or where Emma Nolan finds herself in the sudden attention of PTMC's resident Orthopedic Surgeon. Unaware of why everyone else in the ED avoids him like the plague.
