I think Carl should've gotten more screen time and we shouldn't of just ignored the fact he thought hurting animals and beating up kids was okay. So I expanded on his character a little.

He stood out to Flux because he looked gentle.
A perpetually serene look that clashed heavily with his Luminaran armor and diamond sword. Matched with snowy white hair, pale skin, and warm grey eyes. He looked more like an angel than a soldier.
Flux sometimes felt his eyes wander to that guard on their breaks. Watching him explore their nest of tunnels, watching him kindly unwrap lunch packs for older miners like he was Mother-fucking Teresa.
“You’re staring.” Thomas points out to Flux.
