Mickey grunted. “I’m just hungry, man.”
Ian pushed himself up so they were sitting side by side. “Bet I can distract you for the next twenty minutes.”
“Like to see you try,” scoffed Mickey. Ian raised an eyebrow.

“Hey, Mick.”
“Hey yourself,” he replied. “Lemme guess, your boss needs you to stay later.”
“A little later, yeah,” said Ian. “I can tell her I’m needed at home if you’d prefer? Not sure how fast I’d get there though. The L isn’t running and traffic is practically at a standstill. Looks like the storm knocked out the power for half of Chicago.”
Mickey swallowed hard. He wanted more than anything for his husband to be home so they could ride out the storm together, but he knew first hand that Ian was damn good at his job. Had to be for the court to even consider granting him a waiver in the first place. If his boss was asking him to stay, that meant they were expecting a lot of people to need his help. Even if Mickey would have loved to be selfish and ask for Ian to come back to him, he knew he’d have to find some way to be okay with this.
“Nah,” he said after a beat. “Go play hero or some shit. I’ll keep the bed warm for when you get back.”

“First of all, you’re the one who brought it up by asking a dumb fucking question,” replied Ian, knocking into Mickey’s shoulder playfully. “And second, we don’t live in some bullshit girly-ass rom-com all right? Our lives were always fucked up but we got through it together. Whatever you’re worried about, we can get through that together too.”
Mickey took a shaky breath, his hand coming down to cover Ian’s where it still rested on his knee. “You really are a corny motherfucker, you know that right?”
