Summary
It has been four years since the Boiling Isles was saved from Belos and the Collector. Hunter now lives in the Noceda household, and alongside Luz and her friends he attends university in the Demon Realm. Life has settled into a happy pattern, and even though 'normal' will always be a stretch for someone raised as a child soldier, it seems closer now than ever before.
That is, until he gets sick with a mysterious illness and discovers that there is a quirk to grimwalker biology none of them had previously been aware of: grimwalkers can only live until the age their ortet was when they died, no longer.
And Caleb Wittebane died at age 20.

Unfortunatelly, or fortunately depending on your angle, Darius very much noticed that his son wasn't hoe on time. And, with all if the traumatic events of their life having happened not-that-long-ago, he started to worry...Day 4: Free Space

Summary
Explaining safety to Hunter is a little bit like trying to explain what a mangosteen or guava tastes like to a white middle schooler from Connecticut.
She can say that a guava is a pear-shaped fruit known for its delicate flavour that resembles a combination of pear and strawberry, but it’s really just skiffed from the peach-pink carton of Maaza-brand guava juice that doesn’t really taste like guava but a whole lot like sugar. It’s good, but it’s not the right explanation or definition and that’s matters.
Luz reflects on her role as Hunter's sister post-canon.

Summary
Did you know that you could die from drinking too much water?
Darius didn’t, not until Hunter, in the middle of another before-school breakfast where Darius was flipping eggs and hissing at the thought of having to bring Hunter to school again because some bag of shit had sent Darius a fucking hand-written death threat on Hunter’s life. Why? Because they didn’t think that he’d answered for his crimes as the Golden Guard. And Eda’s got her hands full, so he’s not going to ask her to pick up Hunter on her way to whatever’s her semi-illegal, somewhat-morally-questionable scheme of the day. And he’s sending Hunter to school because Hunter loves going to school and doesn’t know about the threats on his life.
Darius ponders the nature of surviving on a lazy day where his biggest responsibility is delivering and picking up his son from school.

Summary
It really didn’t start like this. It really, really didn’t start like this and she’s pretty sure that no one (except maybe Eda) had any intentions of it ending up like this when Darius was the first to invite “everyone who has a somewhat parental role in my son’s life” around for “wine and quiche or takeaway pizza if I decide that I’d rather die than stand around in the kitchen for hours”.
She thinks everyone, including her, just came because it sounded like a good fucking way to spend a Thursday evening-slash-night and because it’s kind of a weird position to parent a kid with we-kind-of-just-saved-the-world trauma so it’s nice to get pointers from other people in that same weird position.
Really, it should have been like the semi-awkward school dinners that Camila used to host when she still had time to be on the PTA, before it was one of the many things that she had to give up in favour of her new hobby called Caretaking Of The Dying Husband.
But it wasn’t. It didn’t end up like that. It ended up with Eda body-slamming into a very purple and very dripping effigy of Belos (thanks Alador) after slamming a whole row of bright-green shots dispensed by Darius.

Summary
“I don’t know about this,” Darius tries to insist while Hunter is already hopping onto the couch, brandishing a truly hideous hat, and aiming straight for Darius’ head. Darius ducks under, then to the side, sticks out his tongue but doesn’t dodge for the third time, even though he sees Hunter coming at him.
Luz had gotten Hunter practically jumping off the couch with excitement when she'd asked him if he wanted to "go get boba" (whatever the fuck that meant), and after Hunter had confirmed they were going to “the good one” and “not that one that’s popped up just because it’s a fad, the good one next to the thrift store” (whatever the *fuck* that means).
And Darius knew that he was going too, as soon as Hunter had turned around and grinned. Even though Darius would much rather have stayed on the couch, and even though his back and branded arm was smarting something fierce, when Hunter asked for something, Hunter got it. Simple as that.
Post-Day-of-Unity, Post-Collector, Post-Everything, Hunter introduces his father figure to boba and other Human Realm delights and against the backdrop of So Much Shit, they're both happy they exist and get to grab boba.

Summary
It didn’t take long for Darius to open the door, as if he was waiting for Hunter. He looked a little different. More cozy, and more tired. He had eye bags similar to Hunter's own, his wrinkles were more prominent, like he had aged five years in the past few months. He had purple braids that fell just past his collarbone, ones Hunter had never seen before.
Hunter straighten his back, “Hi.”
Darius blinked once, then twice. “Is this all you have?” Darius gestured to the bag with his brow furrowed.
Hunter frowned, not udnerstandign why that particularly hurt him. Yes, it was all he had. That was just a fact.
“Sorry,” Darius huffed, “Bad start, hi little prince.””
It was strange, hearing Darius’s voice again. He spoke heavy yet gentle, like the rumble of a distant storm. The comment didn’t exactly hurt Hunters feelings, it was more a quick sting, and something he recovered from quickly. “Hi,” Hunter said again.

Now that he really looked at the situation at hand, the toy wasn’t even that far away from the shore. The only problem was that the waves had already begun to pick up with an intensity that confirmed it wouldn’t stay that way for long.

Summary
Things had been…well, different, to say the very least. In the aftermath of Belos’ demise and de-puppetfying everyone, Hunter had been given multiple offers in terms of housing from the various adults, Darius included.
And after shifting through and considering his options, Hunter had chosen here.
Just acknowledging it made something warm and cold burst inside of Darius’ chest like fireworks. He hadn’t allowed the nerves to visibly wrack him in front of the kid, wanting to become some semblance of a grounded figure he could rely on without doubt.
He’d even almost convinced himself he was ready for it.

Summary
Their masks laid with them. And that hurt more than anything else. Their individuality was tarnished with the piles of skeletons, but the masks created insult. The haunting figure of the golden guard following them to death, unable to wear away like everything else.
And in the middle, sat the smallest golden guard. Whose body was too young to be thrown with the rest. Whose body would never be thrown with the rest. It was his little figure that gave Darius the ability to move again. Tunnel vision. He swallowed his throw up, blinked away his tears, breathed out his anger. Hunter needed him, nothing else mattered.
