It is different for his brothers. They offer their wives the sky and the sea. There are castles perched upon clouds, and palaces with warm, smooth water lapping against their walls. There is beauty everywhere, opportunity everywhere. Colin cannot offer his wife any of that. He can only offer her hell.
“You could stop this,” she reminds him as the days begin to grow colder. “I could stay with you this year. It could be summer forever, you know.”
But he cannot do it. He cannot steal life right from underneath her feet.

As long as he can remember, Colin's had an insatiable sense of wanderlust. He's always had a calling to go out and look for something, even when he was a little boy and sneaking off and getting lost in the forest stretching out across the grounds of his family's country estate. There was something out there waiting for him, something that he's meant to be searching for, something that will give him that sense of purpose and fulfillment that he's been missing all his life. And this job scouting minimally explored planets allows him to do just that. The only problem, however, is that he has absolutely no sense at all of what that "something" is that he's meant to be looking for.

Or, the fic no one asked me for where Alien Pen needs Astronaut Colin to help her repopulate her dying planet, and maybe, despite all the obstacles in their way, they just might be destined for each other too.
