“The war is over,” Frodo whispers. It feels like he’s taunting the Gods, like this is all a cruel joke, and poking the bubble will make Sam disappear and replace the world with fire.
Sam nods. He sits on the side of Frodo’s bed with a soft creak. It’s an assurance that he’s really there.
“Middle Earth is at peace,” he confirms, never looking from Frodo’s face. Gandalf has already confirmed it, in his own way, and Aragorn, too—but it’s different to hear Sam say it. “The ring is gone.”
