But Louis knew.
He curled his knees in tighter to his chest and sobbed brokenly with his mouth pressed to the tops of his knees. He tucked one hand against his stomach and clutched at the material of his hoodie. He could still hear the sounds of Harry’s show in the distance, his music filtering out of the arena and into the bathroom in distant hums and vibrations, but despite that Louis suddenly felt like he was back in his old London flat. The same too hot, sick feeling bubbled in his gut, and the same ice cold dread shot through his veins.
He trembled at the sinking thought that somehow, in the most sadistic twist of fate, his story had just started over.

Summary
It'd been easier for Shane to pretend the emotional meltdown that he'd had after their 2014 encounter in Vegas hadn't happened than to bring it up to Ilya. It'd only ever happened that one time. There's no reason to dwell on it or rehash old stuff when both of them are great at aftercare now and have been since they officially got together.

Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.

During a Boston-Montreal game, Ilya's neck is cut by a skate, and Shane is forced to witness the love of his life bleeding out on the ice in front of him.
