    Over Ilya’s shoulder, Shane sees the doctor and Wiebe give each other a look, and in a sudden bout of impatient anxiety, Shane ends up saying the words that come to ruin everything.

    “Don’t touch me.”

    The effect is instantaneous. Ilya’s hands fly to his sides, and Shane gets a front row seat as Ilya’s heart breaks before his very eyes. Eyes dimming and lips trembling in slow, painful technicolor.

    It causes Shane’s heart to break, too, and he vows, immediately, never to see such a look cross his husband’s face again.

    “Y-Yeah, totally,” Shane replied. “D-Do you uh– do you know who that kid with Rozanov is?”

    Scott laughed a little, tilting his head in confusion.

    “Probably Rozanov’s kid,” he informed Shane, causing his brain to stall completely.

    “You didn’t hear?” Scott asked, and Shane blinked, trying to reboot his mind from the crash that Scott had just caused. “It’s why he took time off,” Hunter informed him. “Found out he had a kid, I guess. Or something like that, I didn’t really get the details.”

    Of all the reasons he’d thought of for Ilya disappearing for the past month, this had never crossed his mind. A million different thoughts raced through Shane’s mind. How the hell was Ilya a dad, and why hadn’t he told Shane and how the fuck did Scott Hunter of all people find out before him and—

    And what the fuck was Shane supposed to do now?

    After the tuna melt situation, Ilya suddenly disappears from hockey for six weeks, claiming some sort of family emergency. Shane showed up to the All-Star game ready to try and fix things, only to be shocked to find a little girl at Ilya's side with remarkably familiar blue eyes.

    Or: Shane tries to starve himself as punishment for losing, Ilya tries to feed him, and it turns into a very soft night of pampering because Ilya is legally incapable of staying angry at a crying Shane.

    “I am.” Lucy said “and if you’re who I think you are, then I know why you’re here.”

    “Holy shit,” the kid breathed, voice soft with awe.“we actually fucking made it?”

    “No, you didn’t.” Lucy replied, guilt stabbing at her for being the one to dash the elated expression right off the kids face. “and if I were you, I’d turn around and go back wherever the fuck you came from. The fireflies can’t help you and you can’t help them.”

    Dr Lucy Rolland did not believe in a cure, and she certainly didn't believe in the fireflies anymore. Then she stumbled across Ellie and Joel at the university in Colorado, and was dragged back into the search for a cure kicking and screaming.
