Summary
He takes the last item out of the box. It's a cassette tape, but smaller than the ones that Mama used to listen to sometimes, in the afternoons before his father arrived home. The label doesn't have a title or a track list printed on it, either. Instead, someone has scrawled 'September 2003' on it in blue ink.
Four months before Mama died.
Ilya's stomach clenches as he realises what he's looking at. It's a tape from the answering machine that used to sit in the living room next to the landline.
While in Moscow for his father's funeral, Ilya receives a box of items that belonged to his mother, including a cassette tape. It's probably unwise to go onto the ice in Montreal the following week after finally listening to it. But Ilya has never met an unwise decision that he didn't want to grab with both hands and call his own.

"You didn't tell her?"
"Questions. You have too many," Shane tries, with a little grin, but Ilya's not having any of it.
"You concealed the existence of that kitten? Again?" Ilya looks at him askance, like he can't quite believe it.
"Not on purpose!"
OR: More people find out about Shane's kitten.

Summary
"If you need a cat, and you deserve a cat, the universe will make sure that a cat finds you. That's the Cat Distribution System at work," the woman explains.
"But I don't need a cat," Shane says, baffled.
"Are you sure?" the bearded guy says, looking down at the box, where Shane is still stroking the kitten's head.
"Yes?" Shane says, frowning as the kitten rubs its small, bewhiskered cheek against his finger.
Shane finds a stray kitten; Ilya not so slowly loses his mind.

The MILF Theory (And Why the Internet Got It Wrong) by pucksandpower

Summary
The internet has decided that Ilya Rozanov is absolutely, definitely, 100% banging a Hollander.
They’ve got photo evidence. Multiple sightings. Instagram stories from the same café. The man stayed OVERNIGHT at the Hollander residence.
It’s the most legendary power move in NHL history: seduce your rival’s hot mom to assert dominance. There’s just one tiny problem with this theory. Ilya’s fucking a Hollander, all right. Just … not that one.
Or in which Ilya’s boyfriend's mother keeps adopting him, the internet keeps assuming the worst, and Shane Hollander is having the worst month of his entire life. At least until he does something that breaks hockey forever.

Summary
The problem was that everyone who played for Boston, except for Ilya, was like a million years old and had forgotten what fun was, if they’d ever known. They were all, like, married with kids and their idea of a good time was a barbecue where they drank a few flat weak-ass beers and or went golfing. Ilya just wanted to have fun, okay? He just wanted to live.
or
Ilya gets traded to Montreal. Everything goes better than expected.

Summary
There’s still a big part of him that wants all the same things he used to. The hockey, those other interests, the simplicity of the smaller circle. But there’s a twinge of something else now beside it when he considers it for too long, a bruise he can’t place the origins of. He’d been able to put somewhat of a name to it, after Rose.
He only wishes he hadn’t filled in the rest of the blanks staring down at a grainy photograph of Svetlana Vetrova in a convenience store parking lot in Boston, a bag hanging off of her manicured finger just transparent enough to make out the logo of a First Response as she’d ducked into a sleek, black sports car, driving away with Shane's best worst would-have-been and, presumably, Ilya Rozanov's baby.
Shane feels no particular way about this turn of events. He really, honestly, mostly is somewhat close to believing that, too. It's progress.
