Rover knows he shouldn’t enjoy the way Scar’s hand tightens in his hair, how those ombre gloves feel like both heaven and hell as they yank his head to the side, giving Scar more access to his sensitive throat. He knows he should fight back, try to regain some sense—any sense—of normalcy in this bizarre new world, because this isn’t what he’s supposed to be doing. The tree at his back digs in painfully as Rover writhes against it, but he knows there’s no use. Scar has his hands pinned above his head, other hand in his hair, and everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong, and Rover doesn’t know what to do.
In any world, in any universe, Rover knows that this is wrong.
But then why does it feel so right?

Summary
The day that he and Koyuki get married is the happiest day of his life. He still can’t believe that someone so wonderful would choose him, but he’s going to do everything in his power to make sure she never regrets it. Hakuji is determined to be the best husband in the world. He’s determined to make sure she never wants for anything, and he’s determined to live a life that his father would be proud of.
And for a couple of blissful years, he does. He trains the few students their dojo draws in while Keizo continues working odd jobs, and Koyuki watches on with a proud smile that leaves him glowing every time.
Then she falls ill again. For a few heart-stopping moments, Hakuji fears the worst. He fears that she might not recover this time. Then they find out that she’s pregnant, and everything is wonderful and filled with hope again. He waits on her hand and foot throughout her pregnancy, and though it wasn’t easy on her, she and their son both pull through.
His life is turning out better than he ever could have dreamed of. Hakuji is happy. Really, truly happy.
He should have known that it wasn’t going to last.

Neuvillette winced at the sound of Wriothesley and Sedene’s fierce arguing in the hallway. He loathed the distance he had put between himself and the Duke, but knew it was necessary. His strict instructions to keep Wriothesley out of his office were for the warden’s own good, no matter how much it hurt the Chief Justice to stay away.
“Fine! But I expect an explanation. If I don’t get one, then I’ll just keep coming back!” The Duke’s parting shot seemed to strike the Iudex’s heart.
“Please don’t,” he whispered once the doors of the Palais Mermonia slammed shut.
Please do, his traitorous heart echoed.
Or, Neuvillette saves Wriothesley from the brink of death by claiming him as his mate. Certain that Wriothesley will hate him for it, he seals himself away in the Palais Mermonia and promises to let the Duke live as normal a life as possible without getting in the way of his happiness.

It’s funny, because Wriothesley had always thought someone like Neuvillette would be unapproachable, that the Chief Justice, passing judgment to all of Fontaine, would be someone he could only admire from afar.
But now, Neuvillette is in Wriothesley’s office, chuckling at one of Wriothesley’s dumb jokes, and Wriothesley wonders, not for the first time, about which gods have smiled on him to put him here, now, across the table, watching Neuvillette laugh over a cup of tea.
