Will Byers had been lonely for a while now, feeling so out of place even when he was surrounded by all his friends - his party. There was a time when being around these people would have felt overwhelming, but in a good way. There was a time when being around Mike Wheeler, just being in the same room as him, would have been utter bliss and comfort.
That felt like a lifetime ago now.

“You can’t have him,” Mike hissed, his nails digging into Will’s skin as he clung even tighter. It was like Mike was trying to absorb him. “I won’t lose him again. Never. Again.”
“We won’t take him from you. I promise. But you are hurting him Mike. You don’t want to hurt Will, do you Mike? You never want to hurt Will, you want to protect him.”
Mike snarled at Nancy, “Never! I would never!”

Or: Will is feeling lost and alone while with friends until he has a strange feeling that leads him to meeting a Mike Wheeler that isn’t his. A Mike Wheeler that may reciprocate all those deeply buried feelings that are drowning Will. In this new Mike, Will may finally find the happiness that he has been denying himself.

"What are you doing here?" Mike's face dropped as his eyes slid from El, past Max, and over to Will, "And what are you doing with them?"
"Shopping," El said with a blank expression on her face.
Max smirked, "This is their new look, what do you think?"
"You know she's not allowed to be here. And Will, how could you just run off like that, we were worried!" Mike glared straight at Max despite the fact part of what he said was directed at Will.
"What are they, your little pets? El can't leave the cabin, and god forbid Will strays more than three feet from your shadow, despite the fact you were completely ignoring him!" Max snapped right back.

Or... A rewrite of Stranger Things season 3 where Will leaves the mall with El and Max and helps them investigate while growing closer to both girls and becoming more confident in himself. Meanwhile, Mike considers what it might mean for him that he's more upset that his best friend ditched him to hang out with someone else than he is about his girlfriend breaking up with him.
