Of all the things Viktor thought would kill him, it somehow makes sense that the one currently winning out is his own stubbornness.
He's grown very familiar with the limits of his own existence. Precisely how far he can walk, with or without his brace, his cane. On a good day, on a bad one. How long he can sit in one position before his back begins to protest and how long he can ignore it before it becomes nonnegotiable. With proper support. With none.

When Viktor finally emerged from the Hexcore membrane, Jayce hardly knew where to look. His entire body was different after days spent in the strange, iridescent webbing: dark, violet sinews threaded through every inch of what had once been pale skin, and gold filigree wrapped around his ribs, tracing the lines where his back brace had once been. Curling lines of gold accented his wrists and wound around his thighs, drawing Jayce’s eye downward until he gasped and averted his gaze.

“I don’t know how people can do that.” Jayce hadn’t meant to say it out loud, but now he had to answer Victor's curious, raised eyebrow. Clearing his throat, he clarified, “Sell themselves.”
Following his line of sight, Viktor noticed the brothel and laughed. “It is work, Jayce. Just like anything else.”
“I guess. But isn’t it kind of… violating?”
“Eh, not particularly.” Viktor shrugged. “No more than any other physical labor.”
A nervous laugh bubbled out of Jayce. “You sound like you’re talking from experience.”
Viktor halted, and Jayce had to curve his body to avoid crashing into him. Turning, Viktor gave him a long, indecipherable look and said, ”Perhaps I am. Would that matter to you?”
