"I am willing to...pay...rent," Dream says, each successive word loaded with more uncertainty, until his voice has actually risen on the word 'rent.' Not quite a question, but as near to it as Dream is likely to get in this situation, which is rapidly becoming desperately uncomfortable (for Dream) and confusing (for Hob).
"Do you know how money works?" is the first question that pops out of Hob's mouth.
After making an ill-advised bet with his sister, Dream of the Endless is rendered completely human for one year. In need of a place to stay he turns to Hob, unaware that his oldest friend has been holding a torch for him for the past several centuries. Human experiences! Living life to the fullest! Overcoming depression! Food trucks!
It's going to be a long year.

Summary
Hob Gadling saves Morpheus Endless' life on the Titanic, and after a few minutes with the man, decides to do whatever he can to help someone who always helps others.
If he gets a kiss for his efforts, well, that's simply a cherry on top.
He isn't expecting to feel so acutely for Morpheus (call him Dream) the more time they spend together. Or to fall in love with his small family. But he is, even though he knows he won't get to keep them.
