Summary
Ed’s paying attention, all right, to the shape of Stede’s lips around each word, to the way he still looks the most at home when he’s done up to his throat in buttons, frills at his cuffs. His hair’s a bit longer now, nowhere near Ed’s but it curls up at his neck and shines gold as the sun, and there’s always freckles across the bridge of his nose, and his cheeks still go pink every time he catches Ed staring. Ed wouldn’t call him tan, exactly, but he’s lost that never-goes-outside glow for real now, and he keeps threatening to grow a mustache. As if that’s much of a threat, but Ed plays along all the same.
The door shuts heavily behind him, and Ed startles with a grunt. “Oh!” Stede says, muffled behind layers of fabric, “You’re here!” There’s a rustle and then Stede pops out, some of his curls matted to his forehead with sweat and a goofy grin on his face. “Happy Birthday!”
“What,” Ed says flatly, pulling up the calendar in his head. It’s August, it’s Tuesday, weather’s good, moon’s waxing crescent. Then he remembers that he doesn’t know his fucking birthday.

It's Ed's birthday, and that's only the first surprise

Summary
At the space where “dirt road with a lot of trees” meets “actually the forest”, Jaskier sees the flash, tall and green-gray and terrible. Dandelion barks madly, twisting herself into a frenzy, refusing to cross the threshold. Then Jaskier sees the flash again, and Dandelion freezes, and then calms.
He is not a child, Jaskier reasons, far from it. And Dandelion is relaxed now, leaning back on her haunches and scratching behind her ear with one golden paw. Still, he turns around back towards the house. He will have plenty of time to wander, he reasons, as soon as he finishes his commission. The desk in his make-shift study will do, far more than the unforgiving ground he had planned to sit on.
Dandelion casts her eyes back just once. Jaskier can’t quite bring himself to do the same.
***
Sometime after he semi-retires, just when he and Jaskier start to get comfortable, Geralt has business to attend. Jaskier stays behind and tries to keep himself busy. And accidentally befriends an old and terrible creature, as one does.

Summary
Jaskier doesn’t know how to test the limits of his sudden hardiness, but it doesn’t really matter because he finds Yennefer across from him one night all the same. Geralt is away again, hunting whatever, and although Jaskier isn’t performing, he’s a far cry from the type of maudlin he’d been the last time he saw her.
She fills his glass immediately, with something amber, stronger than the wine she’d produced before. She bids him to drink it, and he’s mid-sip when she says, “I may have made a mistake.”
He freezes, looking at her over the top of his mug. He lowers it carefully. “Is this poison?” he asks pleasantly.
“What? No, not that,” she rolls her eyes. “The last time we spoke. I couldn’t bear the thought of Geralt dragging your half-dead corpse to me again, so I did a little spell, something to keep you out of danger.”
“Oh.” Jaskier thinks about it. “How’s that a mistake?”
Yennefer twists her face in regret. “You’re a bit immortal now, sort of.”
Or,
Jaskier learns that friendship with Yennefer is both a great and terrible thing, and that his life would be so much easier if he and Geralt just talked for once, like adults.

Summary
Now they’re here, the four of them. Jaskier and Yennefer look so proud, arm in arm and watching Ciri so intently. Geralt watches her, too, of course, remembering the way she turned each lesson into a piece of her own style. He has nothing left to give her, and he is satisfied. He couldn’t have asked for her to be any better.
It doesn’t seem like anything to muse out loud. “It will be strange, without her, on the road.”
Jaskier turns to him. “On the road?” he repeats, his face strangely frozen.
“Hm.” Geralt nods.
Jaskier closes his eyes and sucks in a breath through his nose. “Right,” he says, and abruptly marches towards Yennefer’s house.
Geralt watches him go. He wasn’t even loud enough to disturb Ciri from her training.
Or,
Geralt and Jaskier have wildly different ideas of what life will be like when Ciri leaves the nest.

Summary
It probably wasn’t always like this. There must have been some time when walking into a grocery store didn’t make his palms sweat, answering the phone didn’t make his throat close up. When he tries to remember what being calm feels like, he smells fresh pie and engine grease, but he’s not a kid anymore and it’s just not that simple.
They don't talk about it, this problem Dean has, or that Sam doesn't have one, or that Cas, when he meets him, has one that's not quite the same. But they make it work anyway.
