Lucas is three, and he looks at her - her short, fat limbs, her bean-sized fingers and toes, her button-like eyes which are squeezed shut, her wide open, crying mouth - and then he looks at his own, bigger hands and thinks: this is what you will become. He brings a careful finger to one of hers to compare their sizes, and within seconds she has it in a deathly vice grip.
The space between one person arriving and another person leaving is at once as small as a grain of sand, and as wide as the distance between the opposite edges of the universe.
