By the time they reach Mr. Paul’s place, Kat’s little legs are tired from all the walking. She’s getting too big for Flora to carry her, which is unfortunate, so she just shifts her weight on her feet as her big sister knocks on the door. Twice, then a pause, then thrice more. It’s a special knock so that the man knows they’re not cops. Mr. Paul hates Scotland Yard for some reason.
The little girl wrinkles her nose as the door opens and reveals Mr. Paul in the doorway. She can’t tell if it’s him or the room that smells like smoke.
“Hey.”
Flora’s voice is more snappy when she’s not talking to Katrielle. “Don’t ‘hey’ me, Paul. Is Al here?”
