Summary
It is hard to be close with someone as important as the general. Beside the obvious threats for one's safety, there is another challenge to be faced—rumours and people who thinks they know everything about anything.
Such environment would be difficult and confusing for everyone, but especially for a child.
Yanqing went through many stages of understanding what his relationship with Jing Yuan was. The final conclusion was shaped by years of overhearing snarky comments, hushed conversation or more boldly stated opinions. Some speculated that the general was cultivation an heir, while others claimed he kept the kid around just to use as a secret weapon. Throughout it all, Jing Yuan never offered a response.
And eventually Yanqing accepted that he was no more than a soldier.
But was he really just that?
(Or: an awful lot of miscommunication finally gets resolved.)
