Summary
“Carter slumped into a chair in the break room, pinching the bridge of his nose. Today sucked. His head hurt like hell, he felt like a dead man walking, and half the clinic patients seemed inclined to infect everyone with the seasonal plague. He’d had a case of pediatric drowning, he’d cracked an old man’s ribs before finding a DNR, and he’d forgotten to bring a coat, which meant he’d arrived soaked, and that he would be walking home in his lab coat. Maybe a car would mistake him for snow and run him over.”
Or
Carter forgets that people care about him. He gets reminded again.

Just as before, she is the first one to reach him.
The others have been scattered across the hospital by the tumultuous winds of the night, some still in operating theatres, some desperately trying to keep the ER afloat, some sitting in Doc’s with coffee cups between their palms as they reckon with the irreconcilable. Peter has been called in to perform another surgery. And Carter…
Through some miracle, Carter is alive.

BTHB prompt- Banished
Lucy is drunk when the idea is suggested. She's sitting in the dorm common area with a few of the other med students, knees tucked to her chest, nursing a bottle of beer, and amongst the hazy half-formed fantasies it's the one that somehow takes flight.
Doctor Carter is strict when it comes to dorm parties- but what if he didn't have to know about them?
She arches her brow, struggling to keep Willy’s ever swaying gaze. What?
Well, think about it. If we made sure there was no evidence in the morning, and somehow kept him out all night… he wouldn't have a clue.
OR
In an attempt to keep Carter from vetoing a dorm party, some of Lucy's fellow students decide to drug him with sleeping pills.

Something Mark never quite gets used to is how quickly patients can deteriorate. Just when you think you've pulled them from rock bottom, that alarm blares, and things get worse than you ever thought possible. It's jarring at the best of times.
It's even worse when it's your own fault.
OR
After being mistakenly treated for a relapse, Carter's illness is discovered, and the team fights to save his life as he deteriorates.

Summary
The pain is all in his head.
When John was in rehab, he heard the words so often they became a mantra, one that echoed in his mind from the moment he woke up to the moment he fell asleep. Slowly but surely, the nonexistence of pain became an internalised truth.
Except now he's sitting on a bench outside of the ER, curled into himself because he hurts, and for once, he can't be convinced that the pain exists only in his head. Something is wrong.
OR
Shortly after Carter arrives back to work from rehab, he starts to feel unwell. He knows he hasn't been using, but does everyone else?

Summary
“Ah, John. There you are.”
His mother’s tone is the rubber band snap of a corporate manager closing a deal, and she barely throws him a glance as she adjusts the brooch on her cardigan, eyes glued instead to her own reflection. John half leans against the doorway, so many years of being forbidden from entering his parents’ room keeping him glued to the threshold.
“Are you ready for this evening?”
A gala. A real, extravagant gala with gallons of expensive alcohol that John can't drink with his meds, and hundreds of interrogative faces that scrunch in pity whenever he catches them staring.
OR
A week after John's released from the hospital, his parents throw a ball.

After months, they switch up his meds. The tongue twister that's pumped through his IV changes letters slightly, but John is too tired to really care when the oncology nurse points it out and asks if he's willing to continue. He signs the damn form, because really, what difference can it make? Regardless of the name you give the poison, it's still poison. It'll make him sick either way.

Carter has a major setback in treatment.

BTHB prompt- Prank Gone Wrong
“Raul?” He calls. His voice is breathy and odd.
And now that he thinks about it, his breathing itself is odd too. Fast. Shallow. And his pulse. And-
“John? Hey, what is it?”
The medic glances back and forth between the road and the wing mirror- he's the one driving now, which at least makes this request a little easier.
“Could you…” Carter clears his throat. It changes nothing. “Could you pull over? Think I might b’about to throw up.”

Sicktember Day 9- "Get your butt back in bed!"
Kerry pauses the TV when she hears those clumsy, familiar footfalls on the stairs, her chest heaving in a sigh. The static flickers. In the quiet that's left behind, she can make out the laboured sound of his breathing with each step, too, until at last the door creaks open, and there he is. Carter. Flu-shaky, arms wrapped around his middle, teeth chattering. Hair flopping limply over a shining forehead.
“You should be in bed.” She tells him, arching her brows, and he curls in on himself slightly. Chastens.
“I k-know, just n-needed some water.”

After living in Kerry's basement for a month, Carter gets the flu, and is definitely 100% okay on his own (not).

Sicktember Day 11- No Known Cure
Carter never remembers the seizures themselves. It's a mercy, perhaps, and one that his co-workers lack- while he chokes and gurgles back to consciousness, eyes rolling, confused and distressed, they sit by his side in full awareness of what they've just witnessed.
He wonders what that must be like.

Sicktember Day 13- Chronic Illness
His body simply doesn't play by the rules. Which is why it's been pleasantly surprising, over the past few years, that he's been able to keep his malfunctions covert enough to avoid suspicion. Each faint at work has been in the lounge or bathroom, either hidden in plain sight feigning a nap, or curled in a cramped stall with his neck at an angle. When his GI issues play up, he blames bad takeout or, more profitably it seems, his anxiety. During migraine attacks and feverish spells, he tells the others that he's simply feeling a little ‘under the weather’.
And the good thing about County is that everybody's too busy to ask questions.
OR
Unbeknownst to the rest of the ER, Carter has POTS. During his first ever long shift as a surgical intern, it rears its ugly head to make his life a (barely) living hell.

Sicktember Day 22- Sobbing
Carter thought he knew grief.
For many years, it walked beside him in the silhouette of a slightly taller brother. He felt its presence on birthdays and holidays, when there was always one less card to send, one less gift to wrap, and he thought he'd grappled with it for long enough that it wouldn't suffocate him anymore.
Yet here he is, sitting in the darkness of an empty suture room, and suddenly grief has a new shape.
It's a baby boy.

Summary
When at last she catches sight of him, all grievance in her voice evaporates.
“Carter?”
He's curled on his side beneath his comforter, eyes closed, evidently still deep asleep. The cause of his state is explained in the rosiness spreading across his cheeks and nose, the unmistakable flare of fever. Where the flush doesn't reach, there's instead complete pallor.
She sets her crutch against the wall and wanders to his bedside, the physician within her momentarily silenced as she stands over him, just watching the slow shallowness of his breaths.
He's sick.
OR
While Carter is renting from Kerry in S5, he falls sick one day, and things are far worse than they initially seem.
