Summary
When Bucky told Yelena that the phone call “went poorly”, he meant that it had ended with the both of them damn near sobbing, even as they shouted at each other over the phone. It was like their usual bickering, except it was real, and that argument, if anything, was the one that cemented to Bucky that this was truly over. That he would probably spend the rest of his life watching Sam on the news, tall and broad and confident, and be able to think only of the way Sam had sobbed in his arms after the cameras and flashing lights were finally gone, all out of the beautiful words he used in his speeches, the night that Karli had died.
He was expecting aliens, when he saw the satellite image of that spaceship. What he wasn’t expecting was for, after a good ten minutes of the team arguing about what to do, the Tower security alarm to alert of a breach.
He especially wasn’t expecting Sam Wilson, Joaquin Torres, and Scott Lang, waiting in the common room of the tower.

Sam shows up at the Watchtower with word of imminent threat to the multiverse fourteen months after he and Bucky broke up. Bucky's still very much in love with him; and so, maybe, is Sam.

Summary
The Thunderbolts knew about Sam, in a way. Somewhat. They knew, of course, that he and Bucky were friends, but not of their relationship. They knew that things had been complicated, with the argument over the Avengers title.
Suffice to say, his teammates did not know that whenever Bucky left the tower, it was either to drive four hours to D.C. or to return to his (and Sam’s, at this point) Brooklyn apartment: the apartment that had two toothbrushes on the bathroom counter, an I LOVE CAPTAIN AMERICA mug in the kitchen sink, and a frankly impressive collection of vintage R&B vinyls.
And Bucky wanted to keep it that way.

Summary
He heard Sam’s steps approach him, then felt arms gently slink around his waist from behind, and he smiled a little. Sam hummed, leaning up to brush a kiss to his temple.
“I take it none of this blood is yours?” he said by way of greeting, his voice low.
Bucky bit his lip. “Some of it,” he admitted, and turned around.
Sam sucked in a sharp breath. “Jesus, Buck,” he breathed, his concerned gaze flickering over Bucky’s face. “You alright?”
Shrugging, Bucky averted his eyes. “Bruised and battered ‘s all, sweetheart.”

He was smirking as Bucky looked at him longingly— but definitely not pouting, because Bucky Barnes didn’t pout, no matter what Sam may claim. “You really did miss me, huh?” Sam breathed, softly, fondly, almost as if in wonder, bringing a hand up to cup Bucky’s cheek.
“Yeah,” he mumbled, staring into Sam’s eyes like there was nowhere else he'd rather look.

A heavy flush creeps up to Steve’s face as he joins in on the laughter sheepishly. “What? Was it – Sorry, that was dumb, huh?”
Sam shakes his head, his hand finding the handle of his cart. “No, man, sorry,” he lets out, grinning ear to ear. “It’s not dumb. It was cute."
Steve raises his brows, smiling. “Cute?”
Sam's smile doesn't falter. “Yeah, cute.”

“Well, don’t work too hard, Sam,” Joaquin said, throwing him a wave as he stepped inside. Then right when the doors were almost completely closed, he smirked and said, “Oh yeah, you’ve got a visitor in your office.”
Sam blinked in surprise, but didn’t have time to respond before the doors shut.
“A visitor?” He wondered aloud, on the quick trip up.
But when he caught a glimpse of the time on his watch when he stepped off the elevator, he knew it was really only likely to be one person.
“Steve,” Sam called out, excitedly, before he even had the door completely open. “Made it back in time for lunch after all huh?”
“Nope,” Bucky answered, tone clipped, from his spot on the couch where he was holding a picnic basket. “Looks like you’re stuck with me.”

Summary
Sam Wilson wakes up in the hospital after a mission gone wrong to three discoveries:
One, his shoulder is wrecked.
Two, Bucky Barnes hasn't left his bedside in fourteen hours.
And three, according to the hospital staff, Bucky is apparently his husband.
It’s a paperwork mistake. Months ago, Sam listed Bucky as his emergency contact and wrote *partner* under relationship. He meant *mission partner*. The hospital made a different assumption.
Sam thinks this is the funniest thing that’s happened to him all year.
Bucky does not.
But then Bucky volunteers to take Sam home. He starts cooking his meals, keeping track of his medication, helping with physical therapy, and making Sam’s coffee exactly the way he likes it.
And somewhere between *emergency contact* and *husband*, Sam starts to wonder when the misunderstanding stopped sounding quite so ridiculous.
