Summary
Contrary to popular belief, J.J. and Shane shared rooms on roadies just as much as Hayden and Shane did. Not that it mattered to fangirls online, who'd rather focus on Hayden's awkward side hugs with Shane as "proof" of their illicit gay relationship, and not the fact that the same instagram dump features Shane sitting in J.J.'s lap for half the photos.
J.J. is not salty about this. He loves the gays. He wants gay fans. He has gay fans. He simply wants to understand, academically, why Hayden "three kids and a wife" Pike reads as the gay one when J.J. is right there looking the way he looks.

Really, if the world was going to bear witness to Hollander losing his shit on ice, wouldn't it have been more fitting for it to be at him? The details of this strange scenario flood his imagination as Ilya stews in his envy. He wonders what it would be like for Hollander to hit him. Ilya would like it, he’s sure, however painful it’d be.
He wonders if Hollander would like it, too, and if he’d like Ilya to hit back. The answers come to him quickly, as if fed to him by the man himself.

JJ didn't think the others saw it. Hayden, maybe, but Jackie was the only WAGs's name Shane had committed to memory so Hayden never brought it up. JJ didn't have a wife or girlfriend. He had his hookups and the names of the best restaurants in each city they player in. If JJ had a dog, Shane would probably mix its name up with Drapeau's. The others didn't get that however pathetic or sad they might think Shane, Shane thought the same of them tenfold when they missed shots at practice or ate fast food on weekdays. Shane wasn't being prissy or funny when he said, don't embarass me—JJ still doesn't know exactly what it was, but he doesn't care to find out.
Shane had poured everything into his team (possessively: it was his team) and he asked them to give it back that day, so they delivered. When Shane smiled at them afterwards, it felt like love.
