He looks up just as the clouds part, a sliver of weak light piercing through to the cheer of the men. His neck burns even though the rain has stopped, a sort of strange trickling warmth that wraps its tendrils to his very fingertips.
Above him, swaying a little on the first few feet of rigging, is a young man - no more than twenty five he’s sure - hair dripping lightly with a reminder of the morning's gentle rain and grinning bright enough to outshine the sun.

He almost dares to hope for an argument, something unexpected, then his husband blinks, and he's back to being that blank-faced stranger Joe first met earlier that day. "On the contrary. They sit in the quiet half-dark, too lazy to turn on the light. A lone sunbeam illuminates Nicky's eye, his nose.
'I don't know about changing the world,' Joe says finally. 'That sounds like I want to do it all by myself. I just want to do my bit. So we can all be a bit happier tomorrow than we are today.'
'You and me, too?'
For a moment, Joe thinks this might turn into the talk he had been giving Nicky, about the importance of taking breaks. But Nicky is quiet after that, squinting into the sun, and suddenly, Joe isn't quite so sure what to reply.
'I hope so,' he says finally. 'I hope so.'
When the world grinds to a halt around them, Joe and Nicky are forced to navigate who they are (and who they are to each other) from the confines of a flat in Northern Italy.
