Michael was grateful for the fact that dead nerves couldn’t feel pain. Or anything at all. He could almost pretend it was someone else he was performing jaw surgery on– it wasn’t like he looked like himself anymore. Small mercies.
He lost himself in the rhythm of stitching the flesh of the lower half of his face back up to the top. It wouldn’t be a neat scar– Ennard hadn’t been considering neatness when they wrenched his jaw apart and expelled themselves– but at least his mouth would be only slightly too wide. And hopefully he’d be able to speak.
He only admired the finished product for a few moments. He had Joker lips now. Joker lips and sagging purple skin and pinpoints of light in the centers of his filmy dead eyes, like distant stars. Inside him was nothing but his skeleton, no muscles, no organs, just bones and bits of leftover metal to keep him from collapsing in on himself. Small mercies, small mercies. Ennard could take their small mercies and shove them up their robotic ass.
