This is probably a mercy that goes both ways, as he’s driving even himself mad. Sherlock supposes there is a lesson to be learned here about having himself to blame, but of course he blames Mycroft.

Summary
Holmes and Watson find themselves with only one overnight option - a storm-damaged inn with a bed that definitely wasn't designed to be shared by two grown men. Watson is wary of sharing so intimately in case Holmes finds out how affected he is by having Holmes in bed with him. When he can't sleep, Holmes suggests a remedy for restlessness that fills Watson with fear, joy, and then guilt - because Holmes does not allow him to return the favour and does not want to talk about it.
