Beth isn’t in the practice of taking words said in anger to heart. God knows if she was, she and Mother would’ve never managed around each other’s moods. Still, her initial reflex when someone says in one way or another that they don’t want her around is to believe them. He said, don’t call, so she didn’t. Maybe it was silly to fear he still held it all against her, what with the call in Moscow, but then that had been for a higher purpose. For chess. Not her.

After a long Tournament over a glass or four of Rose Beth and y/n decide that maybe they can go a little further than just trading boys for an evening and decide to just have their way with their favorite Benny Watts.
All three soon are thrilled with this often arrangement but the arrangement keeps changing and improving until the girls begin to realize that...

Summary

The nights have lost their terrors ever since Beth had first seen Mr. Shaibel play. With chess to occupy her mind and the board on the ceiling to watch over her, there was nothing to be scared of anymore - at least in those few sacred hours before going to sleep. No matter how dark the night, Beth would be protected.
