Almost a year after Jack wakes up in Montreal General Hospital, his throat impossibly dry and chest impossibly tight, the NHL sends Liam Provost, the last of the Montreal core to retire. Together, they’d won three cups in all, but after the third Bob had left, signing in Pittsburgh. Provost had been the only of the Habs to look Jack in the eyes at the funeral, to pull him into a bone crushing hug and shed a tear.
Truth be told, Jack barely remembers the game itself, the incident.

“Y’know,” Nursey starts, then stops.
“Hm?” Dex prompts over his hammering heart, glued to every syllable Nursey’s willing to give him. “What?”
“I may have lost at beer pong,” Nursey says, his gaze for sure dipping down to Dex’s lips and lingering there for a moment this time, “but there’s other stuff I’m better at.”
Dex is blaming the drinks he's had for the way he matches Nursey, letting himself look down at this pretty mouth so openly, then back up to his eyes, for the way he pushes and asks, “Oh yeah? And what’s that?”
That’s all it takes, apparently. Nursey leans in closer slowly, giving Dex enough time to call it, to pull back, to pop this moment like a bubble and forget it ever happened. But Dex doesn’t.
Or, 8 times Nursey and Dex kiss without talking about it and 1 time they do.

The man makes eye contact, then doubles over all over again.
He catches sight of the name stitched into the front of his Team USA jacket– specifically Team USA Curling, of fucking course– and his mood sours even more.
“Nurse… either clean this up and get yourself together, or I make your life a living hell.”
“I’ll choose hell if it’s with a beaut’ like you.” Nurse still chuckling, is wiping a tear from his eye, “Seriously, sorry for ruining your shirt uh…. Poindexter…”
William mumbles under his breath about how he’s not surprised a curler finds this whole situation so amusing, such entertainment that, even though Nurse is hot, it isn’t an excuse to laugh at someone’s misfortune like that.
“Ah, yes, curlers are quite beautiful indeed, thanks for noticing.”

In light of recent events and the influx of people interested in hockey here, I thought it might be helpful to have a primer not just on hockey, but on the misogynistic, homophobic, racist, classist, ableist, etc. parts of hockey culture. For authors looking to write about a sad, sad time instead of a happy fun time.
I chose not to use Archive warnings because I'm not sure how to warn for this content. Suffice to say, it mentions rape, other violence, drug use, alcohol abuse, underage drinking, and underage sex. I will be linking to external stories where possible to make this work slightly more readable, but even the vaguest mentions of some of these things are stomach-turning. And some items I will reference aren't very accessible, so I'll be including those. Reader beware.

The locker room air is heavy with post-game adrenaline, the scent of sweat still lingering after everyone else has left, and Kent is frozen in place by Jack's gaze from across the room. He never thought he would get this chance, dreamt of it all his life but finally gave up after Jack made it clear that's not what he wanted. But now Jack is right there, wearing the same jersey as him, close enough to touch, if Kent could only move.
Kent is starting over in a new city, with a new team, has to after he almost partied himself half to death following Jack's marriage to a man that isn't him. Maybe, he thinks, he can finally focus on what matters again: hockey. Jack is out, married with the perfect life, playing for the team of someone else's dreams and desperately wishing things were different.
