Erebor falls to the dragon. Only that this time, it is not a red dragon named Smaug, but a green dragon named Bilbo that claims the mountain as his home.
And with it all the dwarves inside.
He doesn't kill them or hold them hostage - oh no. He will protect them, from anything and everything. He devotes his life to Erebor, swears to serve them until his last breath. Even if it means forsaking himself. Even if it means to die for them. Just who exactly has taken up residence in the mountain?Or: how Erebor ended up with a personal guard-dragon and the issues that came with it.

Given King Thrain is a tyrant, discovering he saved one of his grandsons only makes his life that much more complicated.

And so with a resigned sigh he crept over to his door, he prepared himself for one or even three more dwarves in his home. He prayed quietly below his breath to Yavanna, he hoped she would give him the strength and patience to deal with his guests. And potentially Gandalf. His hand briefly hesitated on his door handle, he thought whether or not to deny them entry as he received second thoughts. Pretend he wasn’t home. But… his father raised him better than that, as did his mother. He would do good by them.
Bilbo puffed up his chest and pulled open his door.
